Will you be dressing your pet up for Halloween? {grin} Well I will! Actually our little dog, Boo (so appropriate, right!), will be going around the neighborhood twice. Once in a cute little candy corn pet costume… and the second time in a fun little Star Wars Ewok pet costume!
To make this super cute candy corn DIY Halloween pet costume, you’ll need:
- Yellow tulle
- Orange tulle
- White cotton fabric
- Yellow elastic, 1/2″ wide
- Yellow, Orange and White thread
- WonderUnder
- Stuffing
This is what the costume looks like, a piece of Candy Corn with a tutu! {grin}
Now your easy steps for making your candy corn DIY Halloween pet costume:
- Measure – Start by measuring your puppy around their girth and the length from above ears to tail.
- Cut – Next cut white fabric in shape of a corn candy 4-5 inches less than desired length of costume. Cut width approximately 2/3 the girth of your puppy at widest part (waist).
- Iron – Iron on batting for top and iron it on the wrong side of white fabric.
- Sew – Place stay stitch around both pieces of white fabric about 3/8 inch from outside along seamline. Turn under and fold; iron bottom edge of lining at stay stitching.
- Cut – Then cut top of white fabric after batting is in place about 4 inches from the bottom. Do not cut lining. Cut strips of Tulle in yellow and orange about 7 inches wide.
- Sew – Next place center of orange tulle under presser foot adding a piece of elastic or dental floss (my favorite) between the presser foot so that you can slightly raise it between the groove in the presser foot to insure you don’t stitch into the string or elastic. Zigzag over string for several inches. Holding string at back of presser foot, pull other end of string toward you gathering the tulle after you stitch. Stitch again repeating this as you stitch and gather tulle. Sew as many lengths as you like for fullness and width around puppy’s waist. It is a good idea to baste along center of tulle on top side after gathering to secure gathers.
- Fold – Now fold tulle in half where stitched and pin then baste to top half of white candy corn fabric in seam line. Stitch in place about ¼ inch inside seam line. With right sides together and tulle stitching sandwiched between layers stitch seam enclosing tulle in seam. (If you are a novice at sewing, remember to increase your stitch length as the thicker the material the more thread it takes to go through layers!)
- Repeat – Repeat steps for yellow tulle gathering.
- Sew – Stitch yellow tulle to bottom edge of white batted fabric so that the last layer of tulle is stitched with in the seam between the lining and the white fabric.
- Cut & stitch – Cut elastic in three lengths. Place elastic over tulle and stitch to sides of top only so that when turned the elastic and the tulle will be outside the costume. Place lining over right side of material enclosing elastic and tulle inside. Stitch around ½ leaving a 4 inch opening at center bottom for turning. Turn and pull elastic to bottom leaving the tulle on top side. (You might want to fasten the top of the costume to the collar with a safety pin so your pup doesn’t remove the costume!)
- Stuff and hand stitch – Now insert a small amount of batting on the inside between the lining and the top of costume to give the point some shape. Hand sttich closed the opening.
- Put it on – Finally, holding pups legs place costume over her head and the first and second straps of elastic over front feet. Leave last (top) for underneath her neck in front of legs. And you have the cutest “sweet” dog on the block!
