This morning I’m sharing the first of a few Mother’s Day gift ideas I’ve whipped up ~ DIY coasters! Now I have a thoughtful (because I won’t be making rings on her end-tables) and personalized gift for my mom! And since my mom reads my blog… now she knows! {But no worries Mom, I’m getting you a surprise for Mother’s Day too! LOVE YOU!}
For those of you who follow me on twitter (@celebshoppe) or instagram (@thecelebrationshoppe), you know that I’ve been playing around with some Plaid Paints and Martha Stewart craft goodies from JoAnn Fabric & Craft Stores.
Plaid Paints and Martha teamed up and created some fabulous paints in a wide array of colors and glitter. Yes, glitter! There are also texture additives, gloss coatings, sponges, paint brushes, rollers, stencils and so much more. So as one can imagine, I’ve been painting everything. {grin}
You’ll need:
- smooth tile, I picked these up at Home Depot for 16 cents each
- Martha Stewart foam pouncers (sponges as seen above)
- Martha Stewart Glitter Acrylic Craft Paint ~ bubble gum pink (#32151)
- Martha Stewart Acrylic Craft Paint ~ beach glass blue (#321012)
- Spray sealant coating, to seal and protect your creation
- Felt squares
- Craft glue or hot glue gun
The pouncers/sponges collection comes in six sizes, from 1/2″ to 1 3/4″ . I chose the 3/4″ and the 1″ for this design and started with my beach glass paint. Once it dried completely I sponged on the bubble gum glitter paint, keeping the entire design to one side of the tile.
Martha Stewart crafts also came up with these great self-adhesive, reusable, stencils so there is no taping them down and less chance that your paints will bleed under the design. Using the same color palette, but the color party streamer (#32045) instead of the bubble gum glitter this time, and Martha’s stencil brushes, I created a butterfly pattern in one corner.
Then I added a monogram. My mom’s name begins with an “M” and these are a Mother’s Day gift, so it’s perfect!
To protect your design, once the paint is completely dry, spray your tiles with ultra-cover clear sealant from JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores.
For the bottom of each tile I suggest either self-adhesive raised felt dots on each corner and in the center, or buy a full 8×10 square of felt and attach it with craft glue. You can find them in a variety of colors.
For my packaging, I trimmed a small scallop edge kraft box, available at JoAnns Fabric and Craft Stores too, with the same Martha Stewart party streamer pink paint (the glitter would be too pale against the kraft) and lined the bottom of the box with tissue paper.
Stay tuned next week for a few more creative painting ideas, one including the kiddos. Yep, I’m that cool mom that lets them play with my craft supplies. Well… okay, at least some of my craft supplies. {wink}
