Do you love easy DIY projects? This DIY coffee mug idea is super simple and the best part, you can mix and match it anyway you like to make it truly do it yourself. I used scissors because I love a great paper craft.
I created the fonts with Illustrator and then uploaded them to Cricut (because I wanted to use specific fonts), then I added the ribbon and the scissors. You can create the entire design in Cricut. They have tons of fonts to choose from (I like Elizabeth) and every crafter / creative image from sewing to baking to photography and on and on. You can make this mug truly yours. Or, whip one up for Mother’s Day. I know my mom would love one with a little sewing machine. {shhhhh!}
Here’s what you’ll need to make a truly DIY coffee mug design and you can get it all at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores:
- white mug
- Cricut Design Space (iPad app, iPhone app or Desktop)
- Black vinyl from Cricut
- Gold glitter vinyl NEW from Cricut
- Cricut transfer tape
- Cricut Explore Air
- Optional: Peanut Butter Cookie coffee blend {wink}
Quick and easy steps:
Open a new project in Design Space, add any text you like, add any image you like and cut. (Tip: If you want to do two colors like mine, just hide one color, “attach” the items left, and cut. Then go back into your mat, hide the color you cut, unhide the others, “attach” and cut those. Attaching them keeps them in place on the cut mat so you can use transfer tape for easy application.) Truly, it’s that easy. And if you’re not comfortable with making your own combinations in Design Space just yet, there are hundreds of “make it now” projects to choose from!
To apply to your mug, simple designs you can do with your hands, but for more detailed designs I recommend you use Transfer Tape. Transfer tape doesn’t work too well on the glitter vinyl, but it’s amazing on the normal vinyl.
I also made a very fun DIY Tshirt. I took the “Makers Gonna Make” one step further and made it “This Makers Gonna Make And Take,” because let’s face it… we bloggers take pictures of every craft we make! {wink} Hop over to the Jo-Ann blog, The Creative Spark, right now for the easy tutorial!
For More DIY T-Shirt Ideas:
Feed Me And Tell Me I’m Pretty. That last one kills me! It’s a new Trendy Tee cartridge with Cricut. If you hop over to see them, make sure you check out the ice cream cone shirt… I’m so making that one next.
As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!
