DIY Halloween costumes are the way to go in my opinion.
This DIY werewolf costume and werewolf hunter Halloween costume, thought up by my boys, were so fun! My youngest son wanted to be a werewolf, and his big brother jokingly said then he would be the werewolf hunter… well… as you can see the idea was born.
We went to the costume store first, but there was nothing. Every werewolf costume was either super scary, or really gross. None were appropriate for an 8-year old.
And of course, there was no such thing as a werewolf hunter costume at the store. ;)
My mom is the genius behind Sew Jewell and she made both of these Halloween costumes, which my boys adored!

How To Make A DIY Werewolf Costume
This easy Halloween costume is super simple and no-sew. Yay!
- Cut vest – cut a rectangle from the faux fur that is the width of your child’s chest plus four inches. The length should be the length of your child’s chest from waist to neck, doubled.
- Cut head hole – Double your rectangle and cut a circle the circumfrance of your child’s head. You’ll end up with open sides and small shoulders on either side of he head hole.
- Velcro – using fabric glue, add velcro to the sides of the rectangle so that it closes on either side.
- Dress – put on the vest, with a flannel shirt over top, and holey jeans. Now, stuff small rectangles of fabric three times the length that you want it to extend out of the shirt. If you find it wants to slip, you can either safety pin it to the inside of the sleeve, or fabric glue it if the shirt is old.
- Hair – spray your child’s hair with white hair paint. Add lots of gel, or hair paste, and mold it into a mess!
- Teeth – the glow in the dark teeth are fun because they’re also a bit green. :)
For the werewolf hunter, my oldest, that required a bit more work on Sew Jewell’s part. She picked up a pattern for an overcoat / duster, purchased black denim fabric from Fabric.com and created this fun 3/4 length jacket. She also monogrammed “WEREWOLF HUNTER” on the back just to be clear. {wink} Then I got to work and used Krylon Stainless Steel Spraypaint on one of his NERF guns and a plastic bullet belt.

They turned out so fun and got tons of comments as they roamed the neighborhood.
