The holiday season can be so busy that we rush through. So much so that we forget to take the time to make things special for those that we love. Don’t worry. I’m not pointing any fingers because I’ve been there and done that. {smirk} Not this year though. This year I’m starting early and I’m going to make each Christmas gift thoughtful. Notice I didn’t say expensive… you can create thoughtful and memorable gifts simply by collecting a few of their favorite things!

So let’s get specific. I’m going to show you what I mean in this Christmas gift I collected for my mom on a recent trip to Big Lots. As you guys know, I’m from Alabama and live in Ohio. What you don’t know is that when I was pregnant with my oldest, my mom moved north to be near us. She loves the snow… but not that blistering cold wind that often accompanies it. {shiver} So I thought I would bring her some Christmas cheer… a bit of warmth too! {wink}

You might wonder why I chose to shop Big Lots and not the mall. Well, that’s simple. I can get great quality goodies (like the amazing throw that she’s going to love snuggling under) at a great value. They offer a wide range of products from gift wrap to decorations to food to kitchen accessories to home decor to dog toys to cold milk… yep. My store has a freezer case! So basically, they have something for everyone on your list. And lastly, I only have to enter one store. What’s not to like?!

Okay, so for my mom’s “favorite things,” I started with cherry cordial candies. The foundation and inspiration for this gift is a small box of old fashioned candy. When my mom was a girl, her dad always made sure that she and her eight siblings (I know… my poor grandmother must have been exhausted), had cherry cordial candy at Christmas. When she opens the box she will immediately think of her parents and that will be a Christmas gift in itself.  From there, I thought about what else would make her reminisce about Christmases past. My second thought was for the coffee mugs. She and I drink a lot of coffee when we’re together baking and crafting (yes, the gene for creativity runs in the family). She loves old fashion stick candy canes (they’re soft so they melt in her coffee), she loves peppermint and chocolate (plus I plan to snag a few of those), she has a thing for owls, and fluffy throws for when she curls up next to the fire to watch a good movie.

By the way, whatever you think I spent on this gift… I didn’t. I spent much less. And she’s going to love it so shhhhh and don’t tell her!

Want to see how I put it all together?

I suggest you hop over to Big Lots website or chat with them on Facebook to see all the amazing gift ideas they have for everyone on your list. And if you’d like to whip something up like the above (including that fabulous box!) here are a few pics of my shopping trip! I’m not giving this cute little deer to my mom… that one’s for me. {wink}
