Decorating Pumpkins, Gourds & Squash With Studs

Living in Ohio there are pumpkins, gourds and acorn squash everywhere… And that means fall, Halloween crafts, and decorating pumpkins!

Decorating Pumpkins, Gourds & Squash with Studs | Kim Byers, TheCelebrationShoppe.com

I took my boys to this quaint little farmers market last week and saw these beautiful acorn squash. I couldn’t resist. They looked so much like ghost pumpkins, but for a fraction of the price. Having no idea what recipe I would ever make with them I grabbed several. I thought if nothing else I could use them for fall and Halloween décor. {wink}

So off to JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores (one of my happy places) I went to pick up some fun Halloween supplies for my entryway (can’t wait to show you!) and ran across studs! They have several different shapes and sizes to choose from. These are STUDD*D brand and I found them in the clothing section.

I immediately thought of my acorn squash and of making a grouping of monograms. I think they turned out beautifully and they were so easy!

You’ll need:

  • Pumpkin, gourd or squash
  • Metal studs
  • Pattern or idea for a shape
  • Paper towel

Since I only wanted to create numbers I didn’t use a template. Instead I arranged the numbers next to the squash before placing them to ensure proportion.

But these would work perfect for a more detailed carving pumpkin. Just place your carving template like normal, using one stud, mark the outline of the template, lift the template off and place all the final studs. If the template is really intricate I might even make the holes for 4-5 studs, place them and then more on to the next 4-5, just so you don’t get confused at the end.

And as you go, your pumpkin, gourd or squash might leak a bit of juice. The studs aren’t deep, but still. Use a papertowel to wipe away the juice.
