Have your kids ever expressed the desire to draw? Or have you seen talent in them that you’d like to help foster? I have a few ideas to help you inspire your kids to learn to draw!
I have so many New Year’s resolutions for myself and my business, but all that aside I always ask my kids what they might like to achieve or learn in the new year. This year, one thing they both want is to learn to draw. As a designer, this makes my heart sing. There is nothing quite like being creative on paper. Plus, selfishly… I really love saving all their art and looking back to see how they’ve grown. {grin}
My first bit of advice, get the right materials. Not just a sheet of paper, and not just a pen… My mom always told me that to do any craft, you need the right tools. Without the right tools you’ll find yourself frustrated and uninspired. In my opinion, for the craft of drawing, your kids will be best served with Sharpies, preferably Ultra Fine Sharpies and Pen Sharpies. The colors are bright and defined so they can have great detail in their ideas.
Next, let them pick out a journal that they like. One that speaks to their personality and one they won’t mind carrying around with them. My guys both love the old leather journals with ribbon bookmarks. They write stories in them and they draw fun pictures to support their ideas. I’ll treasure them forever!
And finally, select a teacher that your kids can connect with. I chose to get instruction books for them because then they don’t have to wait until I’m available. They can learn when the mood strikes them. When selecting the books your kids will enjoy, don’t only pay attention to the types of things the author draws (e.g., flowers vs cars), but take into consideration your child’s age and current skill level. My boys like to draw dragons, castles, cars… but before we got there, we started with basic shapes (squares, triangles, circles) to create objects. See the fox above, it’s just a rectangle, a few triangles, a few lines and the letter D. Once they’ve mastered the basics and felt success by seeing their pictures really look like what they intended, then you can move on to more complex and detailed drawing techniques.
Get your kids started drawing! And ready for back to school! During the week of January 3rd 2016 at Staples (while supplies last) Sharpie Fine and Ultra Fine Sharpie 12 packs are only $6 and Sharpie Fine and Ultra Fine 24 packs are only $10. Plus there is a buy 2 get 1 free deal on all Newell writing instruments. Yippee! So when I picked up the Sharpies at Staples for my boys… I got a few silver, bronze and gold Sharpies for me. {wink} I mean… momma needs to be creative too!
Let’s face it, getting the kids back in the groove after a holiday break isn’t always easy, but with a little inspiration and some new school supplies definitely help!
