My goal… to make an ugly sweater for an upcoming Christmas party. Using my Cricut Explore I pulled up all kinds of designs in Cricut Design Space and kept moving things around until I had something!
Next I poured over all the Cricut iron-on colors (they have over 50) and settled on my favorites. I started to cut things out and weed the design… I was so proud. Then my little guys come wandering through my studio. “Mom, that’s not ugly!” They preceded to tell me that I wasn’t going to win the ugly sweater contest at this year’s party… I went from proud to oops… and then back to proud. Because even though it’s not a great ugly sweater, it is a darling DIY tee shirt! {grin}
So to make my “not so” ugly sweater, here’s what you’ll need:
- Gold glitter iron-on, Cricut
- Silver glitter iron-on, Cricut
- White iron-on, Cricut
- Red tee, Target (they have long sleeve too!)
- Cricut Explore Air
- Standard Grip Cricut cutting mat
- Iron
- Design Space graphic
- Optional: Weeding tool
Easy steps:
- Design – open this Cricut Design Space file. It’s sized for my t-shirt, but depending on the cut of your shirt you may want to lay your shirt flat, measure it across, divide it to find your center point, and determine if you’d like the image larger or smaller.
- Mat – apply the iron on, liner side down, to mat
- Cut – read the directions on the package, but make sure that you absolutely “Mirror-Image” your cut or you’ll need to look in a mirror to read it. {wink}
- Weed – weed out all the iron-on that isn’t your image.
- Iron – iron your shirt to heat up the fabric, place the image with liner on top, iron in 15 second intervals. Only takes a few swipes! Also a good idea to flip the shirt and iron the back too just to make sure it’s all set. I ironed all the words and the bulbs at once, then attached the black bulb tops and ironed again. Take your time!
