I love making “gingerbread houses” with my kiddos every year, I just don’t love baking all the gingerbread. {wink} Don’t get me wrong, it smells great and I love baking with the kids, the problem always seems to be that the pieces don’t all come out perfect and they won’t connect like they should. Plus, my kids want to make like 10 houses each… {smirk}
So with Honey Maid crackers, they can make and decorate until their little hearts are content with these graham cracker houses!
When decorating our graham cracker houses, we love to get creative. We don’t just use sugary junk when we decorate, we use several healthy treats too. Like this banana chip walkway… and did you notice that the house is partially assembled with peanut butter? It would have been the entire house but some kids got anxious and grabbed the wrong roofs. {grin} I will tell you that peanut butter doesn’t set as strong as icing, but if you allow them to set overnight before decorating they hold up great!
For your set-up, I highly recommend placing everything in small bowls in the center of your space so everyone can reach. And if you have the time, build the graham cracker houses with icing (or peanut butter), let the kids go play while they set, and then decorate. You can decorate right away, but you have to be a little more careful that you don’t knock them down. We had a casualty when we were decorating. {whimper}
And as for candies, like I said, we try to have a nice balance of pretty bright candy and healthy snacks. The kids are allowed to nibble on all the healthy treats and only on one sugary ones.
Like these yogurt covered raisins! The kids gobbled them down while decorating away. Another way to keep your houses a bit more healthy, don’t bathe them in icing. A little here and there does the trick. (Tip: Too much icing can also make them soggy and more prone to collapse.)
What about banana chip roofs and peanut walkways?! Cute huh!
You can have a bit of the traditional too. {wink} But the balance keeps you happy and your little people healthy!
I picked all the goodies for my Honey Maid Graham Cracker houses up at Wal-Mart. They have traditional Honey Maid, which we used, and they also have cinnamon. We LOVE the cinnamon. If you’ve not given them a try, it’s a must.

As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!
