I love a great cake plate and I have quite a collection. Many I’ve purchased and some I’ve made. Want to make an easy DIY cake plate? Let me show you how!
Sometimes when I’m hosting I can’t find exactly what I want so I get crafty. For my upcoming holiday breakfast with my family I wanted several clear plates and platters for a subtle “Let It Snow” theme. I could find clear plates and I could find clear bowls, but that left the entire table flat and I really like varying heights.
So I decided to give a few of the items some height with clear candle stick holders! For these easy DIY cake plates and pedestal bowls, you’ll need:
- Elmer’s Craft Bond Hot Glue Gun, full and mini (available at Michael’s and Amazon)
- Elmer’s Less Mess All Temp Glue Sticks (available at Michael’s)
- Clear platter, plastic or glass
- Clear candle stick holders, plastic or glass
Easy steps:
- Pipe a stream of hot glue along the top of the candle stick.
- Center the platter or bowl and apply pressure with a heavy book and allow to set for at least five minutes. Done!
I love making DIY pedestal bowls too. Same process as the DIY cake plates and just as easy!
A little tip when making these. You can find the plates, platters, bowls and candle sticks at dollar stores so basically you can have lovely party ware that you don’t mind tossing after the party for less than you’d pay for pretty paper plates. {wink}
You may ask why Elmer’s glue gun. I can tell you, as someone that loves to work with hot glue, it’s the least messy gun I’ve ever used. It doesn’t string. It’s wonderful and perfect when you’re working with clear. Hop over to Amazon and get yours now!

And these aren’t just perfect for holiday parties, they can also put a little punch of fun into your next birthday celebration.
As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!
