Do you love the chalkboard trend? I created four chalkboard crafts for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores’ latest Idea Market Lookbook. The Lookbook is online and in stores so make sure you pop in and grab a copy. My projects and my face are in stores too. I’m not sure where it will be in your store, but look for the isle dedicated to chalk crafts. Eek! {grin}
The first project is a set of inspirational embroidery hoops for my office. I chose phrases that would inspire me daily to stay on track and thank God for all he does in my life, even when it’s not in my plan. Then, I’ll show you how to easily transfer your own designs from paper to chalkboard. So let’s get crafty!
You can skip right over to Jo-Ann for all the details on how to create these embroidery hoops, plus you can purchase all the supplies right there online and they’ll ship to your house! Love that feature.
If you want to make these designs specifically, here are my files:
- Praise Him In The Hallway, 8 inch hoop art (click on image below)
- Dreams, 7 inch hoop art (click on image below)
- Hoop circles – if you have a Cricut Explore, you can use these files in Cricut Design Space. These are set specifically for the 8” hoop, which can easily be adjusted for the 7″ or another size
And now, let me teach you how to easily chalk any design you want onto chalkboard (paper, metal, walls… anywhere).
Transferring chalk is as easy as having paper, chalk, chalkboard and a pencil. Here are the simple steps for the transfer and the hoops:
- Paint – paint hoops solid black. (TIP: Tape over the fasteners.)
- Create fabric hoops – lay coordinating fabric in 14” and 6” hoops, close and trim off excess.
- Print or handwrite sentiments – write sentiments by hand or on your computer, centering them and keeping them within the size of your hoop. Print. (TIP: Using multiple font types and sizes increases visual interest.)
- Cut chalkboard cardstock – using the inner hoop, outer wall, as a guide, draw a light ring with a pencil. Cut. (Or, you could use a circle cutter or a machine like a Cricut.)
- Transfer sentiment – place paper over hoop, center and trim. Flip paper over (white side) and chalk entire back with the side of a piece of chalk. Tape paper to chalkboard circle. Pencil over entire design and the chalk will transfer to the chalkboard cardstock. Remove paper.
- Darken chalk – the pencil transfer may be enough, but if you prefer a brighter effect, use a piece of chalk to go over the design again.
Clean-up TIP: A damp paintbrush, fine tip is best for small areas, is the perfect eraser and if you’re like me, you’ll need one.
You can see all my projects in the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores Summer Lookbook AND in stores. This is just a little peek. And as I mentioned above, most stores even have an isle dedicated to chalkboard project supplies, along with bigger images of these projects. It’s a bit surreal and I’m so thankful.
As always, I hope you’re inspired to craft, bake, create and celebrate!
