Hey friends! Let’s talk about decorating your porch for some serious deep porch sitting.

Black White Porch Picks For A Southern Home | Kim Byers

Many of you have seen around social media that I’m building a modern farmhouse in the middle of 10 acres in Alabama. I’m so excited and honestly a bit exhausted at all the decisions I have to make. That said, I’ve been dreaming of a big porch for years. A place where you can do some serious deep porch sitting (as my mom would say).

I’ve chosen a classic southern look. The house will have a white exterior and after much debate, black accents for my farmhouse in the woods. I’m really smitten with the thought of a black and white porch. We’re building two. The back porch overlooking the yard, and eventually a pool, will be 10×60′. I’m seeing swings, rockers and an eating area with a bar right up to the kitchen window for the kids. Here are a few of the images I found around for inspiration, plus the resources I found to recreate the look on my back porch.

3 Elements For Deep Porch Sitting

In my mind there are five critical elements to deep porch sitting: swings, rockers, and lighting. If you’re southern you know what I mean!

Swings

When I was a little girl, my grandmother had the most amazing swing. Okay, so it was just a wooden swing, but it was where I shared all my secrets with her. That spot, that swing, was extremely special. She’s now passed away and my dad owns the property. We visit it once a month or so, and I always swing on that swing.

I’m thinking since my porch is so long, I may have more than one swing, possibly even swings facing each other. Wouldn’t that be fun?! I’m just not sure if I should go with a wicker swing, a black rod iron metal swing, or a classic wood swing.

Rocking Chairs

My great grandmother’s front porch not only had a perfect little swing (and was about 40 feet long), it also had six rocking chairs. The entire family would go to her house once every few months for Sunday dinner. There would be tons of food in the kitchen, and pie on the porch. So many fond memories.

Lighting

Lighting and fans are critical to comfort on your porch. For one, you want beautiful lights, but you need the right kind of bulbs so that the bugs don’t attack! On top of the right lights and bulbs, fans will help not only keep you cool, but the bugs at bay.

Accessories

Beyond the critical three, there is much accessorizing to do too. These are just a few of the things I’m considering.

Love or Leave?

I would love to know what you think! You’re not going to hurt my feelings. As a matter of fact, I’ll be doing a bit of polling between options on Facebook if you’d like to give me some feedback!
