I’m in love with reindeer crafts this holiday season so for a few of my latest ideas with JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores, I whipped up some easy takes on the famous reindeer with the red nose!
The traditional silhouette reindeer is beautiful for Christmas dinner placecards and the antlers alone are so very popular for casual home décor, but as a mom of two young boys I have to mesh my love of design with their love of Christmas… and that often means a twist of whimsy. {grin}
I’m using my reindeer wreath with kid-like antlers to adorn my hot chocolate bar for my annual cookie decorating party. I’ve been hosting it since my oldest was just two and it is one of my absolute favorite traditions. I mean, sprinkles everywhere, sticky fingers and happy little faces smudged with icing… what’s not to love!
If you’re not hosting a party this year, this wreath would be fun in a child’s bedroom, above the mantel, as the welcome sign in your front entry… anywhere you want your family and guests to smile.
Okay, let’s get crafty!
You’ll need the following items from one of my favorite stores, JoAnn:
- 18” wreath
- Silver vinyl, 12” wide
- Red glitter cardstock
- Sewing pin
- Green foil or glitter cardstock
- Red and white candy cane stripe ribbon, 2” wide
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Small glue dots
- Cricut Explore + my project in Design Space*
- Optional: Command Strip to hang (I often place party and holiday décor in places that normal home décor don’t hang and I don’t want holes in the wall afterwards!)
*If you don’t own a Cricut Explore, these items are easy to cut out by hand. Just use the words “reindeer antler template” in Pinterest search and tons of options will come up. You’ll want to resize each antler to 6×8” or so to fit the 18” wreath I’m suggesting.
Easy how to steps:
- Cut – using your Cricut Explore, or scissors and a template, cut the antlers out of vinyl, cut a nose out of red glitter cardstock and cut a scarf out of green foil cardstock.
- Hang – loop ribbon around the wreath and hang. I suggest making the ribbon about 30” (doubled it will hang 12” or so after it’s tied).
- Nose – insert a sewing pin with a small round head into the wall at the center of the wreath and place a dot of hot glue on the tip. Attach the nose. Using the pin gives the nose a 3-D effect.
- Antlers – remove the vinyl from the backer and attach to the wall. It peels up easily with no damage on clean flat surfaces, but I do recommend a ruler so you minimize adjustments.
- Scarf – using small glue dots, attach the scarf to the underside of the wreath, as if off to the side of the reindeers neck.
Here’s a quick shot of how to attach the nose:
