Proud To Be An American DIY T-shirt Idea – so easy to make for the whole family!

Patriotism is big in my house and my new DIY  T-shirt design says it all.

My hubby served in the Air Force, all his brothers served, my father-in-law served, several nieces and nephews served (in various branches). You get the picture.Patriotism is important to us and I couldn’t be more proud of their service.

They, and so many brave others, allow us the freedoms that being an American brings! In honor of them, I created a new Americana patriotic die-cut design, Proud To Be An American. It’s perfect for T-shirts!

Proud To Be An American DIY T-Shirt

This 4th of July I’ll be wearing mine in glitter! Let’s make one!

Supplies To Make Proud To Be An American DIY T-shirt

You only need a few materials to create this tee, however, the design is in multiple layers so you can use more colors if you’d like! Here are the items I used for this glitter tee:

  • T-shirt
  • Proud To Be An American
  • Blue Glitter Iron-On
  • Red Glitter Iron-On
  • Cricut Explore™ machine
  • Cricut Design Space™ software (iPad app, iPhone app or Desktop)
  • 12”x12” Standard Grip Cricut® mat
  • Cricut Weeding Tool
  • Iron

How To Make A DIY Patriotic T-Shirt

The steps are super simple or use my MAKE IT NOW project in Design Space:

  1. Measure – measure your T-shirt. Depending on the cut of your shirt you may want to lay your shirt flat, measure it across, divide it to find your center point, and determine if you’d like the image larger or smaller.
  2. Design – use my Make It Now or swap out the iron-on colors and layer the design.
  3. Mat – apply the iron-on, liner side down, to the mat.
  4. Cut – read the directions on the package, but make sure that you absolutely “Mirror-Image” your cut or you’ll need to look in a mirror to read it. {wink}
  5. Weed – weed out all the iron-on that isn’t your image. This takes a bit of patience, but it’s worth it.
  6. Iron – iron your shirt to heat up the fabric, place the image with liner on top, iron in 15 second intervals. Also it’s a good idea to flip the shirt (once you think design is set) and iron the back too just to make sure. Take your time!

(Care Tip: Wash the shirt inside out and on gentle. Or, wash the shirt in a bag.)

More Cricut Craft Ideas

I love crafting with my Cricut. So much freedom to make exactly what I want. Like my tee and mug. I not only make, but take pics of it too, so I made a “This Makers Gonna Make and Take” tee, as well as my “Makers Gonna Make” coffee mug design.
